St Mary's Church
‘A village church in the heart of London’.
Welcome to St Mary’s Church! This Georgian gem is in fact the Parish Church of Wanstead. It is the only Grade 1 listed building in the Borough of Redbridge and its beautiful exterior and interior, as well as its large church yard, have featured on many films and television programmes. St Mary’s is also famous for its crypt, tours of which are a local must-do.
However, the church is much more than its building. We are a very friendly group of people who meet for worship at 11am on Sunday mornings, at 8pm for Compline on Wednesday evenings and occasionally at other times too, often joining with our friends at Christ Church for special services.
Our worship is varied and we have a strong lay ministry team who help to lead our services. The worshipping style at St Mary’s has always been a little plainer than at Christ Church and we would class ourselves as friendly and unstuffy Anglican. We use a mixture of Common Worship and the Book of Common Prayer, and our choir enjoys helping us sing a range of music.
Tin in a Bin, our local foodbank collection, is run from St Mary’s Church, as is the Forget Me Nots Singers – a singing group for people who didn’t think they could sing!
We always have refreshments after the service and we love meeting new people, so why not come along and meet us? You will be assured of a warm welcome.
St Mary’s is situated on Overton Drive, between the Golf Club and the Cricket Club. You can find a map and directions here.
